Karatu is a wash station near the town of Gatundu in the district of Thika in Kenya’s county of Kiambu. The area is in Kenya’s Central Highlands near the Aberdare Range in the south-central part of the country. Deep, well-draining, nutrient-rich, red volcanic soils found in the area are ideal for growing coffee.
Karatu is a cooperative established in 1965. The site sits around 1890 meters above sea level. It is strategically situated next to the Rwabura river. The site uses water from the river for coffee processing.
This lot is a peaberry lot. Peaberries are the result of only one seed growing within the coffee fruit rather than the customary two. Typically, two seeds grow within coffee fruit and grow facing each other developing a flat side. Without a second seed growing within the fruit the single seed becomes rounded.Check out brew guides.
