Tumba is a wash station in Rwanda’s mountainous Rulindo district. The station sits at 1,825 meters above sea level. A few years ago the mill came under the direction of Venustre Mugraneza. He is a local teacher and he has been systematically improving the mill over the last few years to much acclaim.
Coffees from Tumba are an annual favorite around here. This is the first year we have picked up a natural processed lot. Like its washed counterpart, this is a Bourbon lot and it is made up of the station’s best coffee cherries. After harvest, the coffee is floated and sorted before drying in full fruit on raised drying beds in a special area reserved for the station’s best coffee.
It is evident in the cup that quality control at the mill is top rate as it allows this great varietal and special terroir to shine and be clearly seen even in a natural preparation lot.
